NIEUW ZWANENBURG: werkatelier voor de toekomst
In 2023 after conducting a reconnaissance mission into the desirability of an in-between space between government and industry to work on societal challenges we helped found the first fieldlab for the future, Nieuw Zwanenburg. A seventeenth century long gable farm with ten acres of land. Our joint mission: growing and developing bio-based building materials for use in infrastructure with respect for soil, water and air. Five different disciplines are involved. Entrepreneurs, Academics and students, Designers, Government professionals and local Experts working together on the intersection of design, technology and material science within a circular, regenerative bio system, taking into account the social, ecological and economic consequences. Nieuw Zwanenburg has two value streams: 1) to further the implementation of bio based building materials in infrastructure and the built environment and 2) to develop the field lab for the future as a scalable ecosystem to be applied to other societal challenges.
Partners include the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management as well as the Technical University Eindhoven and ASML x Brabant C.
Marijn is co-founder and Guildsman at Nieuw Zwanenburg

Marijn spent a decade studying the language of ideas. His view on creative thinking is that it is not a mystical talent but a common and basic skill like English or Maths. What we are lacking is some basic grammar to structure our thoughts and to share them with others. Marijn taught at the leading design institute the Design Academy Eindhoven but also worked with professionals at the smartest square kilometre in the world, the High Tech Campus giving both the same assignment. The results, the same original, poetic and feasible ideas on both sides of the spectrum- creative and so called non-creative.
‘…the right brain is probably smarter in terms of IQ than the left.’ Iain McGilchrist- psychiatrist, author
This led to him writing a survival handbook/ language guide on ideas, Rightbrainer which was published in 2023 by Bruna publishers in both English and Dutch.
Do hit chair bound for the Friedman Benda gallery in New York. The Do hit chair was created in 1999 and premiered at the Salon del Mobile in 2000. It toured the world and is part of the collection of amongst others the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. It is still the my most well known work.
We shot a 9 minute, continuous video just like with the no.1 prototype all those years ago. And at the same location, the Design Academy Eindhoven. We used a camera posted directly in front as in the original movie but had a second mobile camera. Between the two we created a short making of clip.

Governmental organisations are faced with complex problems that are intertwined spanning different sectors. Issues like climate, housing, care all impact each other. As a strategic advisor, Marijn started applying his skills as a designer to societal challenges over a decade ago working first for the Dutch Association of Municipalities and later for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water management. He works across different domains setting up collaborations between public and private parties as well as helps build ecosystems. Marijn uses his creative analytical skills as well as his ability to quickly conceptualise and visualise elements in a process to bring people together around an idea, speed up development and to shift governmental projects from theoretical to a physical, actionable stage early.

Special projects have been part of our wheelhouse for years ranging from Ambassadorship of the Dutch Design Week to a visual narrative for the bilatteral meeting between chancellor Merkel and prime minister Rutte to creative leadership of the visit of King William and the Royal family to Eindhoven.
